3.6 Lubrication and maintenance operations
3.6.16 Battery inspection
Stop the engine.
Clean the surface of batteries.
Check the condition of the terminals and clamps. Clean the ter-
minals and clamps. Apply athin layer of grease on the terminals.
MAINTENANCE-FREE BATTERY
In case of amaintenance-free battery version (the battery has
no accessible plugs), check only the rest voltage on the termi-
nals. The batteries cannot be relled. If the rest voltage is 12.6V
and more, the battery is fully charged. If the rest voltage is be-
low 12.4V, the battery should be charged immediately. After
the battery is charged, leave it to stand for 2–3hours and then
measure the voltage again. The mounting is recommended
24hours after the charging.
Note
The rest voltage is the voltage measured at the terminals of the
battery, which was at rest for at least 12 hours – it was not either
charged or discharged.
Do not turn the battery upside down; the electrolyte may
pour down from the degassing plugs.
If the electrolyte is spilled, wash the aected area with
water and neutralize with lime.
Hand over the old inoperative battery for disposal.
Keep the battery dry and clean.
Do not disconnect the battery when the engine is
running.
When working with the battery always follow instruc-
tions of the battery manufacturer!
Disconnect the battery for repair or while handling wires
and electrical components in the wiring circuit to pre-
vent short-circuit.
When disconnecting the battery, rst disconnect the
cable of the (–) pole. When connecting the battery, rst
connect the (+) pole.
Use rubber gloves and eye protection devices when han-
dling the battery.
Use suitable clothing to protect your skin against con-
tact with the electrolyte.
After eye contact with the battery electrolyte, immedi-
ately ush the aected eye thoroughly with running wa-
ter for several minutes. Then seek medical advice.
After ingestion of the electrolyte drink large quantities
of milk, water or suspension of magnesium hydroxide in
water.
In case of skin contact with electrolyte, remove your
clothing and shoes, wash the aected skin immediately
with soap and water or with solution of water and soda.
Then seek medical advice.
Do not eat, drink and smoke while working!
After completing the work, wash your hands and face
thoroughly with water and soap!
Do not check that awire is live by touching the machine
frame.
Never make direct conductive connection between both
poles of the battery to avoid ashort circuit and arisk of
explosion of the battery.
