Electronic Stabilization
Control (ESC)
Description
Elect ronic stabili zation control (ESC) supports
driver safety. It red uces the risk of slipping and
improves dr iving stabi lity. ESC detects crit ica l sit-
uations such as the vehicle overstee ring and un-
dersteeri ng or the wheels are sp inning. The vehi-
cle is stabilized by app lying the brakes or reduc -
ing e ngine torque . When t he ESC engages, the
G1 indicato r light blinks in t he instr ument clus-
t er.
The fo llow ing systems are int egrated in t he ESC:
Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
ABS preve nts the whee ls from lock ing whe n brak -
ing. The vehicle can st ill be steered even d ur ing
hard brak ing. Apply steady press ure to the bra ke
pedal. Do not pump the pedal. A puls ing in t he
brake pedal indicates that the system is act ing to
st abili ze t he vehicle .
Brake assist system
The bra ke assist system can decrease brak ing dis-
tance . It increases brak ing power when the d river
presses the brake pedal q uickly in eme rgency sit-
uations . You must press and hold t he brake pedal
until the dangerous situ at io n is ove r. In veh icles
with adapt ive cru ise con t rol*, t he bra ke assist
sys t em is more sensitive if t he di st an ce detec t ed
t o the veh icle dr iving ahead is too small.
Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR)
ASR reduces eng ine power when t he drive wheels
beg in spinning a nd adapts t he force t o the road
conditions . This makes it easie r to sta rt, acceler-
ate and dr ive up hills .
Electronic differential lock (EDL)
The EDL applies the brakes to a whee l t hat starts
sp inning and tr ansfe rs t he d rive power to t he
other d riving wheel or wh eels (if the veh icle is
eq uipped with all whee l dr ive*) . This func t ion is
not available at hig her spee ds .

In extreme cases, EDL a utomat ica lly switc hes off
to keep the brake o n the bra ked whee l from over -
heating. The ve hicle is still wo rking co rrect ly. EDL
will switc h on again automatically when condi-
tions have returned to normal.
Power steering
The ESC can also support veh icle sta bility
th rough stee ring .
Selective wheel torque control
Selective wheel t orque cont rol is used when dr iv-
ing on curves. The fron t whee l on the insid e of
t he curve or both whee ls on t he inside of t he
curve are braked se lective ly as needed. This al-
lows mo re precise driving in curves .
Automatic post-collision braking system
The "automat ic pos t -coll ision braking syste m"
ca n help t o reduce t he risk of sliding a nd of addi -
tion al collisions aft er an acc iden t . If t he a irbag
contro l modu le detects a collision above a certa in
vehicle speed, the vehicle is bra ked by the ESC.
The ve hicle does not brake automatically if;
- t he dr iver presses the acce lerato r pedal, or
- the ESC, the bra ke system or the ve hicle elect ri-
cal sys t em are not func ti oning .
A WARNING
- The ESC and it s inte grat ed systems can not
over co m e the limit s im posed by natu ral
physical laws . Th is is es pecially impo rt an t
on slipp ery or we t road s. If the syst e m s be-
gin acting to stabilize your vehicle, you
should immediately a lter your speed to
match the ro ad and t raffic conditions. Do
not let the increased safety provi ded tempt
you into tak ing risks. This could increase
your ris k of a coll is ion.
- Please note the ris k of a coll is io n increases
when dr iving fast , especially t hrough curves
and on slippery or wet roads, and when dr iv-
ing t oo close t o obj ects ahead . The ESC and
it s integ rated syst ems can not a lways pre-
ve nt col lisions - th ere is still a risk of acci-
den t s! ..,.
