The front Advanced Airbag System for the front
seat occupants is not a substitute for your safety
belts. Rather, it is part of the overall occupant re-
stra int system in your vehicle. Always remember
that the airbag system can only help to protect
you, if you are sitting upright, wear ing your safe-
ty belt and wear ing it properly . This is why you
and your passengers must always be prope rly re-
stra ined, not just because the law req uires you to
be.
The Advanced Airbag System in your vehicle has
been certified to meet the "low risk" requ ire-
ments for 3 and 6 year-old children on the pas-
senger side and very sma ll adults on the driver
side . The low risk dep loymen t criteria are intend -
ed to help reduce t he risk of injury through inter-
action with the front airbag that can occur, for
examp le, by being too close to the steering whee l
and instrument pane l when the airbag inflates .
In addition, the system has been certified to
comp ly with the "suppression" requirements of
the Safety Standard, to t urn off the front airbag
for infants 12 months old and younger who are
restrained on the front passenger seat in child re-
stra ints that are listed in the Standard
<=:> page 297, Child restraints and Advanced front
airbag system.
"Suppress ion" requ ires the front airbag on the
passenger side to be turned
off if:
- a child up to about one year of age is restra ined
on the front passenger seat in one of the rear-
facing or forward-fac ing infant restra ints listed
in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208
with which the Advanced Airbag System in your
vehicle was certified. For a listing of the child
restra int s tha t were used to certify your vehi-
cle's comp liance with t he US Safety Standard
<=:> page 29 7,
- When a person is det ecte d on t he fron t passen -
ger sea t t hat has an electr ical capacitance t hat
is more t han t he tota l electrical capac itance of
a child that is about 1 year old restrained in one
of the rea r-facing or forward-facing infant re-
straints (listed in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety
Standard 208 with which the Advanced Airbag
System in your vehicle was certified), the front
Airbag sys t e m
airbag on the passenger side may or may not
dep loy.
The
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes on
when the elect ronic control unit detec t s a t otal
electrica l capacitance on the front passenger seat
t hat requires the front airbag to be turned
off . If
t he
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not
come on, the front airbag on the passenger side
has not been turned
off by the contro l unit and
can deploy if the contro l unit senses an impact
t hat meets the condit ions stored in its memory .
If the total electr ical capacitance registered on
the front passenger seat is more t han that of a
typical 1 year-old , but less than the weight of a
small ad ult, t he front airbag on t he passenger
side may dep loy (the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light does not come on) .
For example, the airbag may deploy if:
- a small child that is heavier than a typical 1
year-o ld child is on the front passenger seat
(regardless of whether the child is in one of the
child seats listed
¢ page 297),
- a child who has outgrown child rest raints is on
the front passenger seat.
If the front passenge r airbag is t urned off, the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light in the center of
the instr ument pane l will come on and stay on.
If the front passenge r airbag deploys, the Feder -
al Standard requires t he airbag to meet the "low
risk" deployment criteria to help reduce the risk
of injury through interaction with the airbag.
"Low risk" deployment occurs in those crashes
t hat take place at lower decelerations as defined
in t he electron ic contro l unit ¢
page 281 .
Always remember : Even though your vehicle is
equipped with Advanced Airbags, the safest place
for childre n is properly restra ined on the back
seat . Please be sure to read the important infor-
mation in the sect ions that follow and be sure to
heed all of t he WARNINGS.
