your engine may already have suffered
serious damage.
-l Engine cooling system
A malfunction in the engine cooling syst em
must be repaired as soon as possible .
When the . symbol in the display flashes ,
then either the eng ine coolant
temperature is
too high, or the coolant level is too low. In ad-
dition to the symbol, the following message
also appears in the display:
Switch off engin e and check coolant level
.,. Pull off the road and stop the vehicle.
.,. Turn off the engine .
.,. Check coolant level

.,. Add coolant if necessary ¢ page 190 .
.,. Continue driving only after the engine cool-
ant warning/indicator light goes out.
.,. Contact your authori zed Audi dea ler for as-
sistance if neces sary.
If the engine coolant level is correct, then the
radiator fan may be the cause of the malfunc-
tion .
If the generator warning/ind icator light
should also illuminate ¢
page 16, then the
fan belt may be damag ed.
&_ WARNING
- If your vehicle should break down for
mechanical or other reasons, park at a
safe distance from moving traffic, turn
off the engine and turn on the hazard
warning lights ¢

- Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escap ing from the en-
gine compartment - you risk being scald-
ed . Wait until you can no longe r see or
hear steam or coolant escaping .
- The engine compartment of any vehicle
is a dangerous area. Before you perform
any work in the engine compartment,
turn off the engine and allow it to cool.

Do not continue driving if the . symbo l
illuminates . There is a malfunction in the
engine cooling system - you could damage
your engine.

Electro-mechanical power assist
If the indicator light illuminates while you are
driving, there is a malfunction in the electro-
mechan ical steering. If t he indicato r light is
showing
t'!'J, there may be a reduction in pow-
er steering assis t . If the indicato r light is
showing • there may be a total loss of pow-
er steering assist. The steering must be in-
sp ected immediat ely by a qualified workshop
¢ A .With the eng ine not running (e.g. when
the car is being t owed), there is also no power
ass ist available .
&_ WARNING
-
If there is a malfunction, the indicator
light for the electro-mec hanical power as-
sist illuminates. Seek professional assis-
tance.

Clutch pedal
Applies to vehicles: with manual transmission
The indicator light l~l illuminates if you do
not press t he clutch pedal when starting the
engine . For safety reasons, the engine will on-
ly start when the clutch pedal is pressed.
n/~ Electronic stabilization program
(ESP)
If the Ji] indicator lamp blinks while driving,
the ESP or ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) is active-
ly regu lating.
If the
Ji] indicator lamp illuminates, the sys-
tem has switched the ESP off. In th is case, you
can switch the ignition off and then on to
switch the ESP on again. The system is func-
tion ing complete ly when the indicator lamp
switches off. .,..
