The Center speaker
Most movie dialog will come from the center
speaker, so careful positioning is an important
part of a good home theater system. Your eyes
and ears should focus your attention towards
the center of the screen.
The center speaker can sit on top, or
directly underneath the TV, as long as it is
located on the centerline and not off to one side.
Position the front face of the speaker
close to the front edge of the TV cabinet. (The
sound waves will not reflect off the top of the
TV cabinet and distort the center imaging).
In some systems, two center speakers
are used; one on either side of the TV. As
they are in mono, the result is a sound image
that is positioned exactly at the screen center.
The Surround speakers
Place each surround speaker to be an
equal distance away from your central listen-
ing position and keep them at least one or two
feet above ear level. The diagram shows
three examples of surround speakers (only
one pair is needed):
A Dipole speakers which radiate forward
and backwards. These are usually
positioned to the side of your listening
position. They radiate forwards and
backwards and have a quiet null zone
which should point towards the lis-
tener. The overall effect is that you
cannot hear the direct sound from the
surround speakers, just the average
soundfield.
B Conventional speakers positioned to
reflect across the rear of the room.
C Conventional speakers angled to
reflect from the side walls.
Conventional surround speakers can be
placed behind the listener, on the rear walls or
the side walls. Adjust the angle so they do not
point directly at the listener but cause reflec-
tions from the sidewalls or the ceiling. This will
give the effect of broadening the rear sound-
stage so that you cannot distinguish the
sound as coming from a small box on the wall
but from a larger area behind you.
The Subwoofer
The Theater Grand Processor has
identical output connections for up to three
subwoofers.
The best location for a single subwoofer
can be found by playing some heavy bass and
proceeding as follows:
1. Place the subwoofer at your normal
listening position, and play your music.
2. Leaving the subwoofer in this position,
walk over to a few likely locations in
your room, where the subwoofer might
fit and find a point where the deep
bass sounds the best. This is usually
somewhere close to the corners of the
room. Try locations fairly close to the
front speakers.
3. When you have found the best practi-
cal location, move your subwoofer to
this point.
4. This is the best position for the sub-
woofer. The bass will sound the best
when you sit in your normal listening
position.
Side Speakers
The Theater Grand Processor has two
side channels, making up a seven-axis home
theater system. The side outputs are matrixed
from the left and right front channels and are
on whenever the front channels are playing.
To turn off the side channels, you need to turn
off the amplifier you are using to power them.
D Shows the general position of the side
speakers. You can also angle them in
towards your listening position.
