2.2 Preparing the Site
2.2.1 What You Will Need
For trouble-free installation of the SDM-8400 hardware make sure you have the following
on hand:
The SDM-8400 base unit, with all cables and accessories you received in the
product package. Refer to “Product Description” on page 4-1.
At least one of the following configuration and management access devices:
- A console terminal (TTY terminal or a PC equipped with terminal emulation
software) for direct or dial-up connection to the console port at the rear of the
SDM-8400 unit, or
- A TELNET network device accessed through IP connectivity over LAN/
WAN.
NOTE: When you first take the SDM-8400 out of the box, the only configuration
device you can use is the console terminal, since the unit does not yet have an
IP address. For details, see “Connecting the Console Terminal” on page 3-9.
A sufficient number and length of cables for all ports.
- One straight through 10/100BaseT LAN cable, RJ-45M to RJ-45M, for each
Ethernet port
- Custom-made HD-26 cables for the serial ports, using V.35/V.11, X.21, X.21
EU (with metric screw on DB-15 connector), TIA-232 (V.24), TIA-449 (V.36)
or TIA-530.
NOTE: These cables are not provided with the SDM-8400 product package.
The user equipment that will be directly connected to the serial port, along with
the appropriate custom HD-26 cable. Details are provided in “Connecting the
User Equipment” on page 6-3.
