Obligations for Laser Users
According to the standard EN60825 the user is required to read very carefully and then follow
the set of directions supplied with the appliance, as well as the safety instructions it contains,
prior to initial use of the appliance.
The instructions regarding safety at work require all the companies concerned to implement
all the necessary measures in respect of health and safety at work, to display them and
ensure they are followed.
Class 3B and class 4
Class 3B and class 4 lasers must only be used in a nominal zone of delimited optical risk. The
user must ensure that no one can be affected by inaccessible radiation. He must also take all
the necessary safety measures. Access to the nominal zone of optical risk must be
monitored.
Safety rules: The people required to activate the appliance will only release the laser
radiation after making sure that all the peoples present are wearing the appropriate protective
equipment and that no unauthorised third party can enter the nominal zone of optical risk.
Training: It is essential that before peoples working with classes 3B and 4 laser appliances
are allowed to use them, they must be trained on the dangers inherent in the use of the
appliances concerned and on the correct use of these appliances. The user must obtain
confirmation in writing from the peoples trained of their participation in this training. A brief
record of all major work performed must be displayed at the workplace.
The training comprises the following points:
Effects of laser radiation on the eyes and the skin;
Risks and secondary effects of, for example, harmful substances, fire and explosions;
Instructions regarding behaviour and work;use of protective clothing;
Inspection of the construction and installation of safety devices;
What to do in the event of an accident.
This training must be repeated at regular intervals.
All companies which acquire a laser system has to be appoint a safety officer which will
insure that every people who work on the laser system will apply the safety rules and that
every people work in the conditions mentioned above.
