9. Side Scan & Sub-Bottom Pulse Characteristics
Table 9-1 provides an estimate of the maximum range possible for a given frequency and pulse pairing
given that the vehicle’s altitude is at least 10% of the expected range. The maximum range can be
impacted by environmental and acoustic conditions and should only be used as a guide when gauging
performance under a set of operational conditions. Tables 9-2 thru 9-6 list the Side Scan pulses that are
available for the Tri-Frequency Side Scan systems. The combinations are 120/410/850kHz and
230/540/850kHz or SSL/SSH/SSVH (SS Low/SS High/SS Very High) that have been delivered with this
system. Table 9-7 lists the Sub-Bottom pulses that have been delivered with this system. If the system is
Bathymetric capable, the Side Scan pulses are identified with a B’ where the Side Scan (SS) and
Bathymetric systems share the same pulses. A ‘Q’ follows the SS frequency identifier to indicate that the
pulse has been quantized to a series of digital pulses to improve the 2205 amplifier’s push-pull amplifier
drive. A simultaneous Side Scan and Sub-Bottom system generates acoustic transmissions such that all
pings end at the same time but generally do not start at the same time. The system generating the
longest pulse should be configured as the SONAR Master such that the other pulses are generated within
that transmission window and end at the same time. There is not an all-encompassing “rule of thumb” for
the best configuration with which to set-up the system it is entirely mission driven. Please consult
EdgeTech Customer Service to optimize system configuration for planned missions.
