Overview

The TEC2 Electric Actuator with Model 500 is a sophisticated device designed for automating part-turn and multi-turn valves within specified torque ranges. This installation and operation manual provides comprehensive instructions for its setup, use, and maintenance.

Function Description

The TEC2 actuator is a non-intrusive, weatherproof unit that can be direct-mounted to a valve shaft or stem, or close-coupled to auxiliary gear drives. It is controlled by discrete inputs, offering two-wire, three-wire, and four-wire control modes, as well as IrDA (infrared), three-wire analog, analog, and network control options. The actuator features a Local Display Module (LDM) with a graphics display, message center, control knob, selector knob, and three LEDs (Red, Green, Yellow) for local operation and status feedback. An optional Remote Display Module (RDM) with Bluetooth® connectivity mirrors the LDM's functions, allowing for remote monitoring and control. The device also supports an Auxiliary Control Module (ACM) to expand functionality with analog inputs/outputs and network capabilities, and an Auxiliary Relay Module (ARM) for additional relay outputs.

The primary function of the TEC2 actuator is to precisely control valve position. It requires initial position limit settings, which can be configured via electrical or manual (handwheel) operation. The actuator includes automatic phase correction. Once limits are set, it operates in normal LOCAL and REMOTE modes. The LDM provides real-time information on the mode of operation, valve status, position, torque, and alarm symbols. The message center displays setup selections, data entry feedback, and alarm messages.

For local control, the actuator can operate in "inching" (maintained) or "momentary" (seal-ins active) modes. In inching mode, holding the control knob in the OPEN or CLOSE position moves the valve, and releasing it stops the movement. In momentary mode, a brief pulse of the control knob moves the valve to the end of travel, and a stop signal or opposite-direction pulse stops it. Remote/Auto control modes are configurable and allow the actuator to be controlled via various discrete inputs or network commands.

The TEC2 actuator also incorporates two-speed timers for configurable opening and closing times, and an anti-water hammer timer to prevent valve plugging or high stresses. Diagnostic features allow users to retrieve historical data such as alarm logs, torque profiles, and operation logs, aiding in troubleshooting.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Input Voltage Range (Digital Inputs): 18-150 Vdc or 20-250 Vac (for ACM)
  • Relay Output Rating (Digital Relays): 5 A @ 30 Vdc or 5 A @ 250 Vac Resistive, 2 A Inductive load (for ACM)
  • Analog I/O: Two 4-20mA analog inputs and two 4-20mA analog outputs (configurable for position feedback, torque feedback, or generic data acquisition/control). All analog I/O are loop powered.
  • RDM Power Options: 24 Vdc (from actuator) or 90-250 Vac 50/60Hz (external source)
  • RDM Cable Distance (24 Vdc): Limited to 1,200 feet (366 meters) using Belden 8723 or equivalent. Can be extended to 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) using two cables (Belden 8719 for power, Belden 9841 for RS-485 communication).
  • Communication Port (RDM): RS-485
  • Passcode: Shipped with "000" default, configurable.
  • Circuit Breaker: Required within line of sight, sized for motor nameplate.
  • Bluetooth Specifications: Class 2 Bluetooth radio, FHSS: GFSK modulation, 0.205mW/MHz max output power spectral density, 4dBm max RF transmit power, PCB antenna (0 dBi max gain at 2.4 GHz).
  • Bluetooth Range: Approximately 55 feet (after one wall), 60 feet (after two walls), 36 feet (after three walls), dependent on RF environment.
  • Battery Backup (DBM - Optional): Two 9V Lithium batteries (Ultralife U9VL 9V). Powers electronics only, not motor control or 24 Vdc supply.

Usage Features

  • Quick Start: Step-by-step instructions for initial setup, including setting position limits and network configuration.
  • Local Display Module (LDM): Intuitive interface with graphics display, message center, control knob, and selector knob for easy local operation and monitoring.
  • Remote Display Module (RDM): Optional module with Bluetooth® for remote control and monitoring, mirroring LDM functions. Supports multiple RDMs with operation priority.
  • Control Modes: Versatile control options including two-wire, three-wire, four-wire, IrDA, analog, and network control.
  • Customizable Settings: Extensive setup menu for configuring valve control, travel limits, discrete inputs/outputs, inhibit and ESD functions, two-speed timers, analog I/O, network parameters, tag name, and passcode.
  • Diagnostics: Built-in tools to display alarm logs, torque profiles (last stroke and archive), operation logs (since last reset), and hardware status for effective troubleshooting.
  • Infrared Controller (IRC) – "Clicker": Handheld unit for remote operation (YES, NO-Stop, NEXT-Open, BACK-Close functions) via the IrDA port on the LDM or RDM.

Maintenance Features

  • Minimal Maintenance: TEC2 Series is designed for years of trouble-free service with minimal maintenance.
  • Lubrication: Normal operation may not require lubricant during the actuator's life. Specific information on multi-purpose extreme pressure lubricants with molybdenum disulfide additive is available.
  • Pressure Relief: A relief vent fitting (Part No. 83385) should replace the 1/2 NPT plug on the gearbox to release pressure buildup from temperature changes (Model 500 does not have this fitting).
  • Fuse Replacement: Two transformer primary fuses (600V, 2A, Bussmann TDC 600V 2A, BETTIS P/N 7019900425) are located in the Separate Terminal Chamber (STC) and are user-replaceable.
  • Lifting: Actuators should be moved using straps, not the lifting eye.
  • Battery Disposal: Proper local battery disposal protocols must be followed for the DBM and "Clicker" batteries.
  • Cleaning: External surfaces of the LDM and actuator can be cleaned with water and/or mild detergent.
  • Battery Replacement ("Clicker"): Replace with Panasonic Part No. CR2031 or equivalent.
