HD (High
Definition)
High Definition refers to an increase in quality and resolution.
HDCP (High-
bandwidth Digital
Content Protection)
HDCP is the industry-wide content protection standard that content
producers use to enable you to see their programming after it travels across
HDMI or DVI connections.
HDMI (High-
Definition
Multimedia
Interface)
High Definition Multimedia Interface is a connector interface for delivering
high quality digital video and audio. HDMI is the de facto standard digital
interface for HD.
HD TV surround
sound
HD can use the Dolby Digital™ 5.1 sound specification to deliver cinema
style surround sound.
i-box An information box which gives extra information about a programme listed
in the i-search banner, TV Guide, FOXTEL Box Office or Personal Planner.
i-search banner The channel and programme information banner that displays when you
change channel or press select while you are watching FOXTEL channels.
Interlaced scan Interlaced scanning requires the picture to be formed on the screen
by scanning in two passes. The first pass (odd numbered lines), leaves
blank spaces between lines, which are filled in by the second pass (even
numbered lines).
LCD (Liquid Crystal
Display)
A liquid crystal display is a thin flat display device. An LCD screen is made
up of coloured pixels in front of a light source — by varying the opacity of
the pixels, different amounts of light are allowed through.
Letterbox A description of how widescreen (16:9) programmes display on a standard
(4:3) TV.
The whole of the widescreen transmission displays, but black bars will
appear at the top and bottom of the screen.

MPEG The setting for standard digital stereo audio from the FOXTEL iQ2’s optical
audio out and digital audio out connectors
Pillarbox A description of how standard (4:3) programmes display on a widescreen
(16:9) TV.
The whole of the picture displays, as if it were on a standard TV, with black
bars at either side of the picture.

PIN Personal Identification Number used to restrict access to certain areas of
the FOXTEL service.
