When an Adult Stops Breathing
Does the Person
Respond?
G Tap or gently shake
victim.
G Shout, “Are you OK?”

Roll Person
Onto Back
G Roll victim toward you
by pulling slowly.

Open Airway
G Tilt head back and lift
chin.

Give 2 Full
Breaths
G Keep head tilted back.
G Pinch nose shut.
G Seal your lips tight
around victim’s mouth.
G Give 2 full breaths for
1 to 1-1/2 seconds each.

Check for Pulse
at Side of Neck
G Feel for pulse for
5 to 10 seconds.

Begin Rescue
Breathing
G Keep head tilted back.
G Lift chin.
G Pinch nose shut.
G Give 1 full breath
every 5 seconds.
G Look, listen, and feel for
breathing between breaths.

Shout, “Help!”
G Call people who can
phone for help.

Check for
Breathing
G Look, listen, and feel
for breathing for
3 to 5 seconds.

G Send someone to call
an ambulance.

Recheck Pulse
Every Minute
G Keep head tilted back.
G Feel for pulse for
5 to 10 seconds.
G If victim has pulse but is
not breathing, continue
rescue breathing. If no
pulse, begin CPR.
