Do you have a question about the Heber MiSTer Multisystem and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The MiSTer Multisystem is an FPGA-based gaming and multimedia system designed to emulate classic consoles, computers, and arcade machines with high accuracy. It is developed by Heber Ltd. and RMCretro, building upon the open-source MiSTer FPGA project. This manual focuses on the 2022 evolved enclosure (Version 5.X) for the Multisystem motherboard.

Function Description:

The MiSTer Multisystem serves as a versatile platform for retro gaming enthusiasts, offering hardware-level emulation of various historical computing and gaming systems. Its core functionality revolves around the DE10-nano FPGA evaluation board, which allows for highly accurate, cycle-accurate recreations of original hardware. This results in a gaming experience that is very close to playing on the original systems, without the input lag or inaccuracies often associated with software emulation.

The system supports a wide range of input and output options, making it compatible with modern displays via HDMI and traditional displays via RGB SCART and VGA. It also features a dedicated Serial Native Accessory Converter (SNAC) port for connecting original gamepads, joysticks, paddles, light guns, and other peripheral devices, ensuring an authentic control experience. The Multisystem is designed to be modular, with an expansion port (P5) for future upgrades and additional connectivity options.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Core Hardware: Based on the DE10-nano FPGA evaluation board.
  • Video Output:
    • HDMI: Supports resolutions up to 1920x1080 60Hz. Features HDMI Isolation switches (SW1) to manage CEC, HEC, DDC, and Hot Plug Detect signals, useful for compatibility with HDMI switch boxes or intelligent HDMI equipment.
    • RGB SCART: Compatible with European 21-pin standard. Outputs high-quality RGB signals to CRT TVs or devices accepting RGB Euro SCART. Automatically combines VSync and HSync signals for composite sync output via a 68 Ohm resistor. Requires the VGA scaler to be turned off in the MiSTer.INI file for correct analogue RGB SCART output.
    • VGA (15-way Dsub connector P1): Can output VGA compatible signals or other standards selectable in the MiSTer.INI file. Supports Sync on Green (SOG) via switch SW6, which adds the Composite Sync signal to the analogue green channel output. Option link J13 allows selection of 5V or 3.3V power to the VGA port, or disabling voltage output.
  • Audio Output:
    • Digital Audio: TOSlink output.
    • Analogue Audio: 3.5mm Jack output.
    • HDMI Audio: Transmitted via HDMI, but not in DVI mode.
  • Input/Output Ports:
    • SNAC Port: Dedicated port for connecting original gamepads and peripherals. Features a built-in level shifter, eliminating the need for external dongles for many controllers. It is NOT a USB 3.0 port and connecting USB devices to it will cause damage.
    • USB Ports: Multiple external USB 2.0 ports. Internal USB headers (J22) are available for connecting internal USB devices, but using these will disable the corresponding external USB ports.
    • Ethernet Port: For network connectivity.
    • Expansion Port (P5): Modular connector for future upgrades, including potential support for JAMMA edge finger connection, Raspberry Pi 'cartridges', USB expansion (zero delay game controllers), solid-state storage (M2 SATA), I/O expansion, composite video, and S-video output.
  • Power Supply: Requires a 5V 4A Meanwell power supply (or higher current if 4A is unavailable). The center pin must be Positive (+5V), and the outer connection Ground (GND). Includes protection devices for overload, overvoltage, overcurrent, and thermal protection (Polyfuse).
  • Internal Storage: Supports internal 2.5" SSD/HDD mounting.
  • Real Time Clock (RTC): Official RTC module can be fitted.
  • Fan: Supports a 30mm case fan, connectable to either J7 (3.3V) or J8 (5V). A 3.3V connection provides quieter operation.

Usage Features:

  • Customizable Settings: Extensive configuration options via the MiSTer.INI file for video modes, refresh rates, scaling, audio settings, and more.
  • Display Compatibility: Designed for both modern HDMI displays and classic CRT monitors, with specific settings and considerations for each.
  • Authentic Control: SNAC port allows for the use of original controllers, enhancing the retro gaming experience.
  • Modular Design: The expansion port (P5) allows for future hardware additions and increased functionality, adapting to evolving user needs and new core developments.
  • Enclosure Design (Version 5.X): The 2022 evolved enclosure is more robust, uses less support material during 3D printing, and provides easier access with a separate back panel cover. It includes integrated mounts for the SD card and reset button.
  • User-Friendly Assembly: The manual provides detailed, step-by-step instructions for assembling the Multisystem, including fitting the DE10-nano, connecting cables, and securing components within the 3D printed enclosure.
  • SD Card Slot: A slot on the SD card mount allows for spare SD card storage or quick swapping of a second SD card.
  • Internal Cable Management: Instructions are provided for routing internal USB and SCART cables to ensure proper fit and functionality of the back panel.

Maintenance Features:

  • Easy Access for Upgrades/Settings: Thumbscrews on the enclosure allow for quick and easy access to the Multisystem motherboard settings, cables, and internal upgrades without needing to remove the entire front cover.
  • Heatsink Installation: A heatsink is supplied (with full kits or 3D printed enclosures) for the FPGA to ensure proper thermal management. Users are advised to check the heatsink bond after a few hours of initial use.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a FAQ section to address common issues such as SCART output not working, sync issues with various CRT types, and audio sound output problems, providing solutions and guidance on MiSTer.INI settings and hardware configurations.
  • Community Support: Users are encouraged to contact multisystem@heber.co.uk for technical questions, visit www.heber.co.uk for product information, www.rmcretro.store for orders, and engage with the RMCretro community Discord server or the official MiSTer FPGA Forum for support and feedback.
  • Self-Resetting Polyfuse: The system incorporates a polyfuse that self-resets after an overcurrent event, protecting the power supply and motherboard.
