6.5. Previewing with headphones
To prepare his musical line-up, a DJ does a headphone preview: he listens to a track on his
headphones while the other one is being played over the speakers, allowing him to adjust the
tempo so that the tracks flow seamlessly together. He can also add audio effects, set cue points
(markers) to start up at a specific point in a track, create rhythmic loops, adjust Bass, Medium and
Treble frequencies, etc.
Your DJ Console Mk2 allows you to carry out this kind of headphone preview. You can select
what you are listening to on your headphones using the headphone output selector, located on
the DJ Console Mk2’s front face.
- Deck A position: Hear what is being played on Deck A on your headphones.
- Deck B position: Hear what is being played on Deck B on your headphones.
- Mix position: Hear what is being played on Outputs 1/2 on your headphones.
- Split position: Hear what is being played on Deck A on your left headphone, and what is being
played on Deck B on your right headphone. If both decks are in Computer mode, however, what
will be heard on your right headphone will vary according the software you are using. If both
decks are in Computer mode in VirtualDJ, the mix is played on the left headphone and the last
MP3 file loaded is on the right headphone.
Note: In external mixer mode, the headphone output selector has no effect.
When launching VirtualDJ, headphone monitoring is in dynamic switching mode by default: the
last track loaded on a deck in VirtualDJ is the track you will hear on your headphones.
When you move the headphone output selector (monitoring mode selection), you definitively
switch to mechanical switching mode, and listen to the deck designated by the headphone output
selector.
To return to dynamic switching mode (independent of the headphone output selector), you must
create a keyboard shortcut in VirtualDJ, setting a value for the headphone mix (a value of 0, for
example).
