Straightness
Measurements
Determine which direction of mOl ion you wan! to be " positive" or " negati ve",
by pre ssi ng slightly on the StrOlightness Interferom ete r and pressins th is bU ll on if
t he direction you pushed caused th e "wro ng" 5i811 for the readir ,g. Remember
that opposite perpendicular moti ons for the Int erferometer and the Re fle c tor
resu lt in reading s with the same sign.
Oe termine the resolution you need from the accuracy you want. En ter the
number of p la ces you want, and then press this key.
For a
Shan Straightness mea sur eme nt. r eso luti on c)( le nd s 10 fi ve places (0. 00001 )
for millimctres, and to she places (0.000001) for inches.
For a long Straightness mea su rement , resolution ex te nd s to four pla ces ( 0.0001 )
for mi llim etres, and to five pla ces (0, 0000 1) for inche s.
This key al so allows you to "smoo th" you r data by ente ring a positive number . A
neHative
reso lut ion number will remo ve any sm oo thing . Smoothing re du ces the
effec lS of vibration.
In this m eas urement mode , this key multiplies the meas ured val ue by a pr eset
(stored) va lue. The multipli er value is " 1 ", unless yo u have e ntered some ot her
va lue (other than "0" ).
You must enter a ca libr ation fa ct or for the particular Straightness Refl ecto r yo u
are u
si ng . You wil l find the calibration number you need on the label without th e
se rial r,umb er on the si de of the S tr aightness Int erfero meter, Enter thi s number
( "x .xx" ), using the ENTRY keys to specify the numeri c va lu e, and then pressing
PRESET .
NOTE
If you are using a Straightness Re fl ector from the HP 5526A
Sys tem, enter the reciprocal of the c alibration nu mber you find
on the Reflector (i.e ., " l /(c al n br" )}.
MAKING A MEASUREMENT
System Checks
1, Make sure the l ase r Head 's Exit port is S Wit c hed to it s large a pertur e.
2. The la se r Head turret must be se l 10 "S TRAIGHT" .
3. The la ser Head 's R EADY indicator mu st be lighted steadily (Le., not blinking ).
4. Make s ure you arc properly interfaced with oth er in s trument s as needed to rec ord yo ur data.
a. If you record y our data manually, no i nt erfaci ng is necessar y.
b. If you wan t to record your data automatically, but you aren't using the HP Dim ensi onal
Metrology Anal ys is Sys t em or another HP - IB co ntroll er, you must have an HP-IB
compatible printer co nne cted to the Measurement Displ ay unit , v ia the reilr panel HP- I B
