Examine and refill when the cooling system is cool enough to touch
(below 49°C [120°F]). Coolant level should be maintained at the bot‐
tom of the filler neck. Refill only with a pre-mixed, fully formulated
coolant compliant with Cummins Inc. coolant recommendations.
Examine coolant level and quality of antifreeze
mixture
The cooling system expansion tank is right under the engine hood.
Examine coolant level
1 Check the level from the sight glass (B) on the expansion
tank.
2 If necessary, tilt the cab and add the recommended coolant to
the tank through the filler cap (A).
NOTE
If you have to add coolant to the tank, be careful to keep the fluid
free of any impurities. Impurities in coolant damage the coolant pump
and impair engine coolant circulation. The right coolant mix and type
can be found from section F Technical data.
CAUTION
Allow the engine to cool down for a while and open the cap care‐
fully if you have to add coolant to the tank.
Steam or hot coolant may be discharged from the expansion tank
and cause burns.
Examine quality of antifreeze mixture
1 Use a refractometer to examine the antifreeze concentration.
CAUTION
Never mix more than 60% concentrated coolant with water. A
greater concentration provides reduced cooling effect with the risk
for overheating and reduced frost protection.
