Processor replacement
Follow instructions in this section to remove and install a processor.
Attention: Before you begin replacing a processor, make sure that you have an alcohol cleaning pad (part 
number 00MP352) and gray thermal grease (part number 41Y9292).
Remove the processor
Follow instructions in this section to remove the processor. This procedure must be executed by a trained 
technician.
About this task
To avoid potential danger, read and follow the following safety statements. 
•  S002 
CAUTION: 
The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off 
the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. 
To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from 
the power source.
Attention: 
•  Read the “Installation guidelines” on page 85 to ensure that you work safely.
•  Turn off the server and peripheral devices, and disconnect the power cords and all external cables (see 
“Power off the server” on page 13).
•  If the server is in a rack, remove it from the rack.
•  Remove any locking device that secures the server cover, such as a Kensington lock or a pad lock.
•  Use the front door key to unlock the front door, and then open the front door.

Procedure
Step 1.  Make preparations for this task. 
a.  Remove the server cover (see “Remove the server cover” on page 199).
b.  Remove the heat sink and fan module if necessary (see “Remove the heat sink and fan 
module” on page 130).
Step 2.  Remove the processor. 
a. 
Gently pull the handle away from the processor retainer.
b. 
Lift the handle along with the retainer to the fully open position.
c.  Hold the processor by both sides and gently lift it away from the processor socket.
