Why is my Mercury Outboard Motor having poor performance?
    • J
      Jane AndersonAug 8, 2025
Poor performance in your Mercury Outboard Motor can stem from several factors. Verify that the throttle is fully open by inspecting the throttle cable and linkages. A damaged or incorrect propeller can hinder performance, so replace it if necessary. Excessive bilge water adds weight, so drain the bilge and find the cause of the water entry. An overloaded boat or improperly distributed load affects performance; reduce the load or redistribute it more evenly. A fouled or damaged boat bottom creates drag, so clean or repair it. Also, a dirty or restricted flame arrestor restricts airflow, so clean or replace it. Finally, stale or contaminated fuel degrades performance, so drain the tank and fill it with fresh fuel.

How to troubleshoot a Mercury Outboard Motor that is hard to start and runs rough?
    • L
      Lisa SnyderAug 14, 2025
If your Mercury Outboard Motor engine is hard to start, runs rough, misses, or backfires, it could be due to a few common issues. Start by checking the ignition system for any faulty components and service the ignition system as needed. A dirty fuel filter can also cause these problems, so replace the filters. Stale or contaminated fuel is another potential cause, so drain the fuel tank and fill it with fresh fuel. Inspect the fuel line and fuel tank for obstructions; replace damaged lines or clear them with compressed air. A dirty flame arrestor can also contribute to these issues, so clean or replace it. Lastly, if the rev limiter is engaging at wide open throttle, try using a propeller with more pitch.

How to fix a Mercury HP700 SCi that will not crank?
    • T
      Tommy WongAug 20, 2025
If your Mercury Outboard Motor engine won't crank, it could be due to several reasons. First, ensure the battery switch is in the "ON" position. Then, check that the remote control is in the neutral position. Inspect the 50 amp circuit breaker or the 15 or 90 amp fuse circuit and reset the breaker or replace the fuse if necessary. Other potential causes include a defective master or starter solenoid (replace it), loose or dirty electrical connections (clean and tighten them), a low battery charge (test and replace the battery if defective), a defective starter (test and replace it), a defective key switch (replace it), or a defective neutral/safety switch (replace it). Also, check the battery cable diameter (gauge); it might be too small for the application.

      Kathleen HansenAug 27, 2025
If the coolant temperature of your Mercury Outboard Motor engine is too low, it could be due to a faulty coolant thermostat (replace it), a faulty gauge or sender (test with a shop gauge and test the sender), or a faulty oil thermostat (replace it).

What to do if my Mercury HP700 SCi Outboard Motor cranks but won't start?
    • D
      David SmithNov 1, 2025
If your Mercury Outboard Motor engine cranks but refuses to start, there are several things you can check. Make sure you are following the correct starting procedure. A low battery voltage can prevent starting, so charge the battery. Ensure the fuel tank isn't empty and the fuel shut-off valve is open. A faulty fuel pump, wiring, fuel pump fuse, 50 amp circuit breaker, or fuel pump relay could be the culprit, so replace any faulty components. Other potential issues include a faulty ignition system component (service the ignition system), an activated lanyard stop (reset it), an obstructed fuel filter (replace the filters), stale or contaminated fuel (drain the tank and fill with fresh fuel), a kinked or restricted fuel line or tank vent line (replace or clear the lines), a faulty crankshaf...
