12-10 Simple inspection and service
Range selector lever
<Automatic transmission vehicle>
Set the starter switch in ON position but not start the
engine.
• Check if the range selector lever operates
smoothly and clicks at each range position
(“P” position through “2” position).
• Check if the shift indicator lamp in the meter clus-
ter indicates the selected range.
• Set the range selector lever to “P” position. Turn
the starter key to LOCK position and check if the
key can be removed from the key cylinder.

Engine conditions
Check the engine for smooth starting and quiet
running.
Parking brake lever stroke
Check that the parking brake lever stroke is 7
to 9 notches.

Service brake pedal
Make sure that the brake pedal has 0.1 to 3
mm (0.0039 to 0.12 in.) free play when pressed
by finger.
Check also that when the brake pedal is fully
depressed, there is a gap of 20 mm (0.79 in.) or
more between the pedal and the floor.

Clutch pedal free play

With your hand, depress the clutch pedal and
make sure that it has 0.2 to 4 mm (0.0079 to
0.16 in.) of free play.
