Chapter 8 Crane operation
95
Moving the basket in working position
The maximum wind speed for working in and with the basket is 10 m/s.
The warning horn activates automatically:
at a wind speed of 8 m/s = intermittent alarm
at a wind speed of 10 m/s = continuous alarm
Every time before starting work make a functional check of the safety equipment.
Furthermore, every time before starting work check if the workman basket is ready for operation. Move
up the empty basket once (no persons or any loose objects) and find out if it levels out properly.
If possible, move the extension booms only at a basket slewing angle of zero degrees!
Entering the basket:
For entering the basket put it down on even terrain. Only when put down on even terrain, it is permitted
to enter the basket.
After having entered the basket close the door and do not open it while working or lifting and lowering
the workman basket.
Prerequisites for workman basket operation
Two people are required to operate the workman basket. The first one (crane operator) is in the basket
and controls the crane via remote control. The second one remains near the crane (operator station),
and in case of any technical defect such as failure of the remote control, power failure etc. he/she
lowers the crane using the emergency lowering mechanism. In addition to that this second person must
prevent that anybody unauthorized operates the vehicle or operating levers on the crane.
Danger! The person outside the basket must not step in the crane's
danger zone or under the basket.
The crane must be controlled from the basket. Before starting work, secure the operating levers on the
crane control station against unauthorized operation.
The key switch must be set to radio remote control. The operator of the basket must take off this key
and take it with him/her.
Make sure the basket floor is free of any contamination such as oil or objects lying around. Likewise
the basket must be cleared of any dirt and sand before starting work (danger of falling, slipping or
tripping).
Before working with the basket check everything for proper operation:
Do the basket doors close correctly?
The crane operator must take a position where he/she is able to view the entire working area. Light up
the working area sufficiently if natural light is insufficient (hand lamp in workman basket). Make sure
there are no persons under the basket or in the crane's working range.
From a working height of 20 meters voice communication must be possible via radio or phone between
crane operator and the person at the crane control station.
Start working
Move the workman basket smoothly and evenly to a position where you can carry out the planned work
without having to bend over the rails.
Existing guard rails and fall protection equipment must be used properly.
