MAGNETIC CLUTCH. (York Compressor)
MAGNETIC CLUTCH REMOVAL. (Refer to Figure 21-16.)
1. Remove the self-locking capscrew and washer from the compressor shaft.
2. Insert a 5/8 - 11UNC-2B bolt in the threaded portion of the hub and tighten. The pressure exerted by
the bolt on the end of the compressor crankshaft will force off the rotor pulley assembly without damage to the
clutch or compressor.
—CAUTION—
Do not use a wheel puller on the outer flange of the pulley. This
can damage the pulley grooves or clutch bearings.
3. Remove the four bolts securing the field assembly against the compressor bosses and remove the bolts,
washers and field assembly.
MAGNETIC CLUTCH INSTALLATION. (Refer to Figure 21-16.)
1. Position the field assembly against the compressor bosses, with the electrical leads to the cylinder side
of the compressor.
2. Secure the field assembly with four capscrews and lockwashers; do not torque at this time.
3. Connect the electrical lead from the field assembly.
—NOTE—
The compressor shaft must be clean and free from burrs.
4. Slide the pulley assembly over the field assembly and onto the crankshaft, now torque the field
assembly 85 to 120 inch-pounds. Then secure pulley assembly with washer and new self-locking capscrew.
Torque the capscrew to 180 to 240 inch-pounds.
—NOTE—
If the clutch is not engaged while tightening the capscrew, insert
a spanner into the holes provided in the armature face.
5. Spin the pulley by hand to check for any interference between the field and rotor pulley assemblies. A
rubbing noise can be heard as the pulley rotates if there is interference. The rotor pulley assembly must be
removed and the mounting of the field assembly adjusted until the interference is eliminated.
