steering cylinder which is connected to the ller arm on the engine. The cylinder moves the ller arm
to either port and starboard, depending upon the direcon the steering wheel is turned.
For boats equipped with a Verado engine, when turning the steering wheel, the helm pump forces
hydraulic uid through hoses to and from power assist pump, located on the port side of the bilge.
The power assist pump then pushes uid to the steering cylinder which is connected to the ller arm
on the engine. The cylinder moves the ller arm to either port and starboard, depending upon the
direcon the steering wheel is turned.
Filling and Maintenance
A hydraulic steering system rarely needs to be relled aer the system is bled. However, if you ever
need to add uid to the system, refer to the steering manufacturers manual for complete
instrucons.
On a Verado powered boat, uid is added at the power assist pump, located in the port forward
corner of the cockpit. To access, open the cockpit oor access hatch. Next, remove the cover on the
power assist pump and unscrew the cap. On boats without a power assist pump, the ll is located on
the top of the helm pump.
Refer to the steering manufacturers manual in owners manual packet for complete instrucons and
warranty informaon.
13. Engine Controls
Depending on the engine installed on your boat, you will either have a mechanical gear shi/throle
control unit or a drive by wireDigital Throle and Shi (DTS®) control unit. The control unit, located
to the starboard of the steering wheel, acvates both the shiing and throle for the engine.
To start the engine, the control unit must be in the NEUTRAL posion. When in neutral, the engine is
running, but the propeller is not spinning. There is a Throle-Onlybuon that when pressed, will
allow you to operate the throle without the propeller spinning. On the mechanical shi controller,
the buon is located at the center of the throle control, and when moved back to the center
posion, the buon will automacally re-engage the shiing mechanism.
For the DTS control, the Throle-Onlybuon is located on the control funcon pad. To engage,
press the Throle-Onlybuon on the keypad when the engine is in neutral. A light located above
the Throle-Onlybuon will turn on and the green neutral light will begin to ash. When you place
the ERC in gear, the warning horn will beep, however, the propeller is not turning. To disengage,
return the ERC lever back to neutral and press the Throle-Onlybuon. The light located above the
Throle-Onlybuon will turn o and the green neutral light stops ashing and remains illuminated.
Moving the control lever forward from neutral engages the forward gear and throle advance.
Moving the control lever backwards from neutral engages the reverse gear and thrust. The throle
lever controls the RPM of the engine and the speed of the boat.
Power Trim & Tilt
The power trim, located on the side of the gear shi throle handle, allows you to raise and lower the
engine for trailering and launching the boat. It also allows you to adjust the engine to create the
opmum run angle for the boat to achieve best all around performance (fuel consumpon, speed).
Refer to the engine manufacturers manual for complete instrucons, informaon and warranty.
