Chapter 4
Starting Generator-Typical
The following generator
sta r tin g i n for m ati o n i s
specifi ed for use at the ship’s
main control panel located in
the salon. It also assumes that the
checklist on the last page has been completed and all system components
are in good running condition. For further information, contact
your closest Regal dealer or refer to the generator operation
manual.
1. Turn “on” the generator seacock in the engine room.
2. Check the ships main control panel to ensure shore main
and all equipment breakers are deactivated.
3. At the lower ship’s main control panel nd the generator
switch. Energize the “on-off switch and hold until the
unit starts.
4. Once the generator starts, release the switch.
6. Let the generator run without a load for several minutes.
6. At the ship’s main control panel slide the starboard
parallel (transfer) bar up. Activate the breaker.
7. Push the port bar up. Activate the generator breaker.
At this point AC voltage should display on the AC line
voltage meter.
8. Now it is safe to activate the desired AC equipment
breakers.
Note: As you are holding the switch until the unit starts it
is automatically receiving the enriched fuel it needs to start.
This procedure works on both Westerbeke and Kohler
units at the main ship’s panel.
Stopping Generator
To stop the generator follow these steps at the ship’s main
control panel;
1. Deactivate all AC equipment breakers.
2. Turn to the “off position the 50 amp AC generator
breaker on the ship’s AC main panel. At this point, no AC
line voltage will be displayed at the AC volt meter. Let the
generator run for 3-5 minutes without a load to cool down.
3. Stop the generator by activating the “stop” portion of
the switch at the ship’s main panel Hold it down until the
generator stops running.
POSSIBLE PROBLEMS/SOLUTIONS
1. With generator main control panel ac-
tivated there is no voltage at the AC line
voltage meter. Check AC output breaker
on the generator. It may of tripped due to
an overload.
2. The generator quit do to overheating. Check the gen-
erator strainer for obstructions such as seaweed, plastic,
or shellfi sh. Be sure to turn off seacock before removing
the strainer basket.
3. The generator will not start from the main ship’s panel
after being serviced. Make sure the generator mounted
switch is in the “run” position.
4. The generator will not crank over to start. Check the
port cranking battery by starting the port engine. If it
starts battery is up. Then check all generator battery con-
nections. Tighten any loose connections.
