Stainless steel rusts Surface came in contact with non-oxidising acids, solu-
tions and their salts, chloride-containing media, sea
water, sponge cloth
Commercially-available "sponge cloths" are dyed and,
due to the colouring process, residual salts remain in
the sponge cloth. If a sponge cloth is used to clean the
stainless steel, the stainless steel begins to rust.
