Introduction
TheLMV52featuresanintegrated,closedloopVariableSpeedDrive(VSD)controlthatistypicallyused
torampthespeed ofthecombustionairblowerwithfiringrate.Thisisaccomplishedbytransmittinga
420mAsignalfromtheLMV52totheVSD,andthenreadingthespeedofthemotorviaamotor
mounted,safetyratedencoderwheel(speedwheel)andspeedsensor.Byusingthespeedwheeland
sensor,theLM
V52canpositivelyverifyboththespeedanddire ctionoftheblower,thusensuring
properVSDoperation.
Blowerspeedanddirectionofrotationhavealargeimpactontheairflowdeliveredtotheburner,and
thusthefuelairratio.ThemostcommontypeofVSD,aVariableFr
equencyDrive(VFD),istypicallynot
safetyratedandwilltypicallynotfailinasafemanner(aVFDfailurewilltypicallycausethecombustion
airblowertoslowdownorstop,causingtheburnertogorich).Thecombustionairpressureswitch
offersonlyasmallamountofprotectioninaVFDapplication,sincetheswitchmustbesettoallowlow
fireoperatio
nwhentheblowerisspinningslowlyandthebloweroutputpressureislow.Themotoror
blowershaftmounted,safetyratedspeedwheelandsensorensurethataVFDfa
ilurewillbequickly
detectedandtheburnerwillshutdowninasafeway.
VFDandACInductionMotorFundamentals
VFDsaretypicallyconnectedtoathreephasealternatingcurrent(AC)inductionmotorthatisusedto
powerthecombustionairblower.ModernVFDsoperatebytakingsingle‐orthreephaseACand
rectifyingthispowertohighvoltagedirectcurrent(DC)fortheDCbus.TheACpoweristypically
rectifiedtoDCwithbanksofdiodes.TheDCbusfeedsabankofInsulatedGat
eBipolarTransistors
(IGBTs),andamicroprocessorisusedtofiretheIGBTsinawaythatthevoltageandfrequencyofthe
modifiedsinewavescanbecontrolled.ThisisdoneforeachofthethreephasesontheVFDoutput.
Themicroprocessorvariesthevoltageandfrequencyofthemodifiedsinewavesin
responsetoasignal;
inthiscase,the420mAinput.
Bydesign,athreephaseACinductionmotorwillattempttoapproximatelysynchronizeitsspeedwith
thefrequencyofthreephasepowerthatitisbeingfed.Thus,ifthefrequencycanbeadjusted,socan
thespeedofthemotor.Astheirnamesuggests,threephasei
nductionmotorsgeneratemagneticfields
intherotorofthemotorbyusinginductionratherthanbyusingslipringsorbrushes.Theadvantageof
thistypeofconstructionisverylowmaintenance,andasmalldisadvantageisaphenom
enoncalledslip.
Slipisdefinedasthedifferencebetweenthetheoreticalspeedatagiven ACfrequencyandtheactual
speedatagivenACfrequency.Slipincreasesastheloadonthemotor(torqueoutput)increases.
ThreephaseACmotorsthatdonothavesliparereferredtoassynchronousmo
tors,sincethesemotors
exactlysynchronizetheirspeedtothefrequencyoftheincomingACpower.Thistypeofmotorisnot
typicallyusedonblowers,butismentionedasacomparisontotheACinductionmotor.Atruly
synchronous2polemotorwillspinatexactly3600RP
Mifitisfedexactly60Hz.Atrulysynchronous4
polemotorwillspinatexactly1800RPMifitisfedexactly60Hz.Incontrast,a2pole,threephaseAC
inductionmotorfed60Hzwillspinlessthan3600RPM,andhowmuchlessisdeterminedbyhow
heavilythemoto
