8. FAULT FINDING
FAULT POSSIBLE CAUSE USER REMEDY
Random program error Try switching off unit for 5 seconds and
switching back on again
Erroneous temperature display or other
visible operating fault
No illumination on panel display when
power is switched on
No power to the Tester
Fuse failed
Wrong voltage setting
Thermal cut-out has tripped
Check that the power supply is available
and switched on
Check fuse on rear panel
Check voltage setting (both voltage
selectors)
Reset the red thermal cut-out button on
rear of instrument
LED on panel remains off when cup
temperature exceeds 55°C
LED failed
Circuit board failed
Return to factory for repair
Return to factory for repair
LED on panel constantly lit but
cup/heating block assembly fails to heat
or heat control is erratic
Faulty circuit board
Return to factory for repair
Difficult to light gas supply Gas flow rate erratic
Unable to adjust flame size sufficiently
Gas leaking from tube
Gas canister low or empty (flame very
small)
Adjust control valve on gas canister
Adjust inner castellated wheel on gas
canister, then re-adjust control valve
Inspect silicone rubber tubing and replace
if necessary
Refill gas canister
Flash point value too low Sample contaminated
Test flame incorrect size
Check sample for contamination and
clean sample cup, filler orifice, lid and
shutter where appropriate
Check that test jet is set correctly
(compare with flame size mark engraved
on top of cup/heating block
assembly/shutter)
Flash point value too high Poor sample preparation
Vapour leakage
Test flame incorrect size
Prepare fresh sample
Inspect lid and shutter for slide wear
Check condition of O-ring seal and
replace if necessary
Check that test jet is set correctly
(compare with flame size mark engraved
on top of cup/heating block
assembly/shutter)
Gas supply fails to turn off On/off gas valve obstructed
On/off gas valve broken
Replace gas canister assembly
Replace gas canister assembly
Flash detector probe does not detect a
flash
Halo effect and/or “popping”
Probe incorrectly positioned
Faulty probe
Faulty circuit board
Close to flash point but NOT a true flash.
Repeat test at slightly higher temperature
Centralise probe in square cut-out in lid
Replace probe
Return to factory for repair
Display shows message 'O/C' Probe not plugged into socket at rear
Faulty probe
Plug in probe
Replace probe
