18.1 Remedying Tiller Faults
18 Troubleshooting
Fault Cause Remedy
Engine cannot be started. Insufficient fuel in fuel
tank.
Refuel tiller.
Main switch set to 0
position.
Press main switch.
Inferior, dirty or old fuel in
tank.
Use fresh, good quality unleaded petrol.
Clean carburettor.
Clean fuel line.
Spark plug socket
detached from spark plug
or ignition lead not
properly fastened to
socket.
Connect spark plug socket.
Check connection between ignition lead and plug.
Spark plug dirty, damaged
or electrode gap incorrect.
Clean or replace spark plug.
Adjust electrode gap.
Oil bath air filter dirty. Clean or replace oil bath air filter.
Engine flooded. Remove spark plug and dry; set main switch to 0 and pull starter
rope repeatedly with spark plug removed.
Carburettor iced up. Allow tiller to warm up to +10 °C.
Engine difficult to start or
engine power
deteriorating.
Water in fuel tank and
carburettor or carburettor
blocked.
Empty fuel tank, clean fuel line and carburettor.
Fuel tank contaminated. Clean fuel tank.
Oil bath air filter dirty. Clean or replace oil bath air filter.
Spark plug dirty. Clean or replace spark plug.
Incorrect fuel used. Check fuel.
Engine overheating. Cooling ribs dirty. Clean cooling ribs.
Oil level in engine too low. Top up engine oil.
Surface of engine covered
in earth.
Remove earth from engine.
Engine speed too high. Reduce speed.
