The screen shows:

asterisk
indicates
that
EDLIN is ready
for
you to enter a
command.
To
enter
the
insert
mode, type:

The screen shows
the
line
number
followed by a colon
and
an
asterisk. EDLIN places each line you create into
the
text
file
until
you
type
ill]
[
ENTER
I or [
CTRL

[
ENTER
I to end
the
file.
You
do
not
type
line
numbers;
they
are
entered
automatically
by
EDLIN.
To
create
a file, type:

the
use

After you
type
ill]

ENTER

EDLIN displays
the
asterisk
to indi-
cate
it's
ready
for
another command.
To
exit EDLIN
and
return
to MS-DOS, type:

system prompt again. Use
the
DIR com-
mand, which
lists
the
files
in
a directory:

The
listing
now indicates
the
existence of
the
new file:
