Starter Assembly
1. Apply a li
g
ht coat of Lawn-Boy “AX”
g
rease to the
pinion
g
ear, thrust washer, and driven
g
ear prior to
installation.
2. Place the pinion
g
ear on small driveshaft in motor
housin
g
with either side facin
g
up. (See Fi
g
ure
101.)
3. Place the thrust washer then the driven
g
ear on the
pin. Make sure the raised side of the driven
g
ear is
facin
g
the cover plate.

4. Install the cover plate with the word “OUT” facin
g
the pinion/clutch assembly and secure with two
screws and dra
g
sprin
g
stud. Make sure you
replace the dra
g
sprin
g
stud in its ori
g
inal position.
Torque screws and stud to 20 in. lbs.
5. Reassemble pinion/clutch assembly. Apply a small
amount of Lawn-Boy “AX”
g
rease to the pin. Slide
the assembly on to the pin with the dra
g
sprin
g

over the stud. (See Fi

ure 102.)

Starter Installation
1. Install the starter leavin
g
the bolts loose.
2. Usin
g
a feeler
g
au
g
e,
g
ap the end of the pinion/
clutch assembly away from the en
g
ine .019” to
.021” (48 mm to .53 mm). While keepin
g
this air
g
ap, ti
g
hten the Allen head bolt first, then the lower
mountin
g
bolt.
3. Plu
g
the wirin
g
connector in and install the shrouds
and fuel tank.
