Check and replace
Work on the 12-volt battery can cause severe
burns, explosions and electrical discharges.
Always wear eye protection and protective
gloves.

Charging the 12-volt battery
To charge the 12-volt battery, please contact a
specialist workshop, as the battery type supplied
with the vehicle from the factory uses a technology
that requires a limited charging voltage → .
Replace the 12-volt battery
The 12-volt battery is designed for its location and
is equipped with safety features. If a 12-volt
battery needs to be replaced, the replacement
must be fitted by a qualified specialist workshop.
Volkswagen recommends a Volkswagen dealer for

The vehicle's electrical system has to be adapted
when replacing the battery. In addition, the battery
parameters for functional safety were only
determined with the original battery. Only qualified
specialist workshops have the appropriate
technology for retrofitting and the correct
replacement batteries. The use of batteries that do
not comply with the above-mentioned regulations
may result in the loss of the vehicle's
roadworthiness certificate.
Disconnecting the 12-volt battery
If the 12-volt battery is to be disconnected from
the vehicle's electrical system, please note the
following:
Switch off all electrical consumers and the
ignition.
Before disconnecting the battery, unlock the
vehicle, otherwise the alarm will be triggered.
Disconnect the negative cable first, then the

Fitting the 12-volt battery
Switch off all electrical consumers and switch off
the ignition before screwing in the socket again.
First connect the positive cable and then the
negative cable .
After the 12-volt battery has been connected and
the ignition switched on, various indicator lights
may come on. These warning lights go out after a
short distance at a speed of approx. 15 to 20 km/h
(10 to 12 mph). If the warning lights do not go
out, visit a specialist workshop and have the vehicle
checked.
If the 12-volt battery has been disconnected for a
long period of time, it is likely that the next service
→ p. 14 will not be indicated or calculated
correctly. In this case, the maximum permissible
