effects
on the airbag system
may result in the air bags not deploying correctly or
not deploying at all in the event of an accident.
To ensure that the efficiency of the air bags is not
impaired and that the dismantled components do
not cause injury or pollute the environment, the
relevant regulations must be observed.
Specialised workshops are familiar with these
regulations.
Modifying the vehicle's suspension may impair the
function of the airbag system in the event of a
collision. For example, the use of tyre/rim
combinations not approved by Volkswagen,
lowering the vehicle height, modifying the stiffness
of the suspension, including springs, telescopic
arms, shock absorbers, etc., can change the forces
measured by the airbag sensors and transmitted to
the electronic control unit. Deter- mined
modifications to the suspension can,
e.g. to increase the forces measured by the sensors.
The airbag system may trigger in certain crashes
where it would not normally trigger if certain
modifications had not been made. Other
modifications may reduce the forces measured by
the sensors and prevent the airbags from deploying
when they should.
