TAMD63L, -P, TAMD71B, TAMD72P, -WJ
The engines are in-line 6 cylinder, direct injection
four-stroke engines. They are equipped with a turbo-
charger, charge air cooler (CAC) and heat exchang-
er for thermostat regulated freshwater cooling.
The charge air cooler (CAC), which is seawater-
cooled, lowers the temperature of the inlet air to the
engine after compression in the turbocharger. This
permits high power output while keeping the com-
bustion and exhaust gas temperatures at an appro-
priate level.
TAMD71B: To reduce exhaust emissions when oper-
ating at low load, e.g. after (cold-) starting, there is a
by-pass valve which closes the air passage through
the charge air cooler (CAC) and instead channels the
air directly into the engine’s inlet manifold via the
electrical preheating element.
Introduction
This equipment is not necessary in the TAMD63 and
TAMD72 as they have a different specification, for
example, higher compression, a different combustion
chamber, and a modified injection system.
TAMD72P (“TAMD72EDC”) is equipped with an elec-
tronically controlled governor – Electronic Diesel
Control (“EDC”).* This further reduces exhaust emis-
sions.
The exhaust manifold and turbocharger are freshwa-
ter-cooled to reduce the radiant heat to the engine
compartment.
