4.9 Shallow Water
Although your World Cat draws a small amount of water for its size, shallow water should be a concern of
all boaters. To avoid this hazard, pay parcular aenon to navigaonal markers and know the area you are
operang in. Be aware of dal changes, including those that have occurred during your trip. Rocks, stumps,
or other hazards are more prevalent in shallow water and can cause major damage to your hull boom.
Engines can also suer damage if they are allowed to run in the sand or mud.
If you do become grounded, lt the motors up to reduce the dra at the transom. Oen this will solve the
problem; however, it may be necessary to rock the boat from side to side to break the sucon along the keel.
If you are grounded on an incoming de, allowing the water to rise can help. Being grounded on an outgoing
de is a larger issue, you need to act quickly to free your boat and avoid being driven further aground. Use
the anchor to secure the boat and await the incoming de, or use it to pull yourself free.
4.10 Emergency Situaons
Unfortunately, even the safest boang pracces cannot eliminate the potenal of emergency situaons
developing. Therefore you should prepare yourself, and your crew, to handle any problems that may arise.
Establish specic plans for res, man overboard, collision, etc., and review them with your passengers prior
to deparng. Planning allows people to remain calm, and gives everyone the condence to resolve the
problem. Secon 4 of the Sportsh, Cruisers, Yachts Owner’s Manual provides informaon on emergency
procedures. Below is important informaon which all owners should be aware.
4.10.1 Emergency Stop Switch
Lanyard clips are provided on all World Cats and when used properly, provide
an emergency stop for the engines should the driver fall from the helm posion,
or need to perform an emergency shutdown to respond to or avoid an accident.
The clip aaches the driver to the ignion panel using a cord. A pull on the
cord will release the clip from the shut-o switch on the panel and shut down
the engines. To restart the engines, turn ignion switches to the o posion,
return binnacle to neutral posion, insert safety lanyard back into clip, and then
turn ignion switches back on. This should only be used to prevent or react to
accidents, and the operator is solely responsible for the decision.
4.10.2 Communicaon
If you witness an emergency or become involved in one, you should request assistance via radio
communicaon or visual signals. Review the informaon in Secon 4 of the Sportsh, Cruisers, Yachts Owner’s
Manual for detailed informaon on how and when to request assistance.
4.10.3 Rendering Assistance
Owners are required by law to render assistance to other boaters involved in an emergency situaon such as
re, collision, casualty, etc., as long as it does not endanger your vessel or its passengers.
4.10.4 Reporng Accidents
Federal regulaons require that operators involved in an accident le a wrien account of the situaon
within 48 hours. Reports should be submied to the State Boang Law Administrator. You can obtain forms
through the USCG or local authories (i.e. harbor patrol, sheri or police oces). In the event that a casualty
or disappearance occurs as the re sult of an accident, you must nofy the authories immediately by phone
or radio and ll out a wrien statement.
