Chapter 14 Appendix
14-1 Terms
1. Lifting weight Q
It is the mass of lifting heavy objects by the crane in rated lifting weight. Rated lifting weight is
the maximum allowable lifting weight for heavy crane safety operations. The weight includes the wire
rope from the spreader, slings, and arm head to the hook.
2. Magnitude R
It is the horizontal distance from the centerline of rotation of the rotary platform to the vertical
centerline of the hook (no load) when the crane is placed on flat ground, also known as working
amplitude.
3. Lifting height H
It is the vertical distance between the crane supporting surfaces to the highest working position of
the hook.
4. Lifting moment M
It is the product of crane working amplitude R and the corresponding weight load Q.
5. Outrigger span
It is the distance between the two outrigger plates, the transverse span b and longitudinal span a as
shown in the Figure.
Transverse span b: the distance measured in the direction between the vertical axles of the
outriggers longitudinally along the perpendicular direction to the crane.
Longitudinal span a: the distance measured in the direction between the vertical axles of the
outriggers longitudinally along the parallel direction to the crane.
