6.3. COMPONENT MAINTENANCE
6.3.1 Stainless steel
Stainless steel is strong and corrosion resistant but still requires frequent routine
cleaning to maintain the surface finish.
Anytec recommends that you wash stainless steel components with mild soap and cold
/lukewarm water after every use of the boat. If added protection is necessary, apply a
cleaning wax.
Even the finest cleaning powders can scratch or burnish a mill-rolled surface. On
polished finishes, rubbing or wiping should be done in the direction of the polish lines,
not across them.
Crevice corrosion, when two pieces of stainless hardware meet a brownish colouring
occurs due to impurities in the water and air. It can be easily cleaned with a good grade
marine polish using a sponge, cloth or small bristled brush (for nooks and crannies).
1. The cleaner your stainless steel can be kept, the greater the assurance of optimum
corrosion resistance. Without proper care, even the best stainless steel corrodes over
time.
2. Never use abrasive cleaners, detergents or soft scrub type cleaners to clean stainless
steel. Never use abrasive pads, brushes or sponges to attempt to remove stubborn stains.
Never use strong solvents or detergents which contain chlorine, and never use silver
cleaners.
