Windows 7 Gadget Serial Driver Installation
In some versions of Windows 7, the Gadget Serial driver gets installed automatically when
the USB serial cable is connected to the SMM-2. To verify this, check to see if Control
Panel>Device Manger>Ports (COM & LPT)>Gadget Serial (COM#) is loaded.
In other versions of Windows 7, when the USB serial cable is connected to the SMM-2, you
may see a message "Device driver software was not successfully installed" which will require
a manual installation of the Gadget Serial driver.
Follow these steps to install the Gadget Serial driver:
1. The usbser.sys file is archived at different locations depending on the operating
system (32-bit or 64-bit). As administrator, search for usbser.sys on the local C:\ drive.
For a 32-bit Intel machine usbser.sys may be located at
C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\mdmcpq.inf_x86_neutral_9f203c20
b6f0dabd
For a 64-bit AMD machine, usbser.sys may be located at
C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\mdmcpq.inf_amd64_neutral_77452
3d133de6343
2. To search and find the usbser.sys file:
a. Open Windows Explorer and begin searching for usbser.sys from
C:\Windows\System32\.
b. Select usbser.sys and right-click: Open file location.
c. Copy the usbser.sys file to the destination folder location as
C:\Windows\System32\drivers.
SMM-2 Serial Mode Configuration
To change the USB connection mode to serial:
1. Connect and log onto the SMM-2, then enter configuration mode by typing
configure and pressing the Enter key.
2. At the command prompt, type set CHPMAX5000-MIB chpMaxShelves chpUsbMode
serial.
Note The SMM2 USB Serial driver which is distributed on the CHP System Release
CD is very specific to Windows XP. The file gserial.inf is not needed on Windows 7.
