AirworthinessLimitations
AsectionoftheInstructionsforContinuedAirworthiness(ICA)thatcontainseach
mandatoryreplacementtime,inspectioninterval,andrelatedinspectiontask
(429-A-04-00-00-00A-009A-A).TheinformationcontainedintheAirworthiness
Limitationssectionmaybechangedtoreectserviceand/ortestexperienceor
newanalysismethods.
CalendarTimeTheelapsedtimeapplicabletoaspeciedcalendarinterval.Theelapsedtime
startsonthedaytheinspectioniscompleted,thecomponentisinstalled,orthe
rotoristurnedforthersttimeandendsonthedaythatthetimelimitexpires.For
example,ifarepetitiveinspectiontaskwithacalendartimeof1yeariscompleted
onJune10th,thetaskwouldneedtobesubsequentlyperformedonJune10th
ofthefollowingyear.Calendartimeiscontinuous.Calendartimedoesnotstop
whenremovingacomponentorplacingthehelicopterinstorage,etc..

Damage
Aphysicaldeteriorationofacomponent.
Delamination
Structuralseparationorcrackingthatoccursatorinthebondplaneofastructural
element,withinastructuralassembly,causedbyinserviceaccidentaldamage,
environmentaleffects,and/orcyclicloading.
Disbond
SeeDelamination.
Discard
Theremovalfromserviceofanitemataspeciedlifelimitoritemthathas
damagethatcannotberepaired.
ElectricalWireInterconnection
System(EWIS)
Anelectricalconnectionbetweentwoormorepointsincludingtheassociated
terminationdevices(e.g.,connectors,terminalblocks,splices)andthenecessary
meansforitsinstallationandidentication.Itdoesnotincludesystemcomponents
(linereplaceableunits),relays,lights,etc.
Examine,Visually
Lookcarefullytodeterminetheconditionofapart/component.Findhowthat
conditionrelatestoaspecicstandard.
Failure
Theinabilityofanitemtoperformwithinpreviouslyspeciedlimits.
Fault
Anidentiableconditioninwhichoneelementofaredundantsystemhasfailed
(nolongeravailable)withoutimpactontherequiredfunctionoutputofthesystem.
Atthesystemlevel,afaultisnotconsideredafunctionalfailure.
FlightTime
SeeTime-in-Service(FlightTime).
Function
Thenormalcharacteristicactionsofanitem.
FunctionalCheckAquantitativechecktodetermineifoneormorefunctionsofanitemperforms
withinspeciedlimits.
FunctionalFailure
Failureofanitemtoperformitsintendedfunctionwithinspeciedlimits.
Inspection
Anon-destructiveexaminationofapart,component,orsystemtoverifyits
conformitytoaspecicstandard.
Inspection,Detailed
Anintensiveexaminationofaspecicitem,installation,orassemblytodetect
damage,failure,orirregularity.Availablelightingisnormallysupplementedwith
adirectsourceofgoodlightingatanintensitydeemedappropriate.Inspection
aidssuchasmirrors,magnifyinglenses,etc.maybenecessary.Surfacecleaning
andelaborateaccessproceduresmayberequired.
Inspection,GeneralVisualAvisualexaminationofaninteriororexteriorarea,installation,orassemblyto
detectobviousdamage,failure,orirregularity.Thislevelofinspectionismade
fromwithintouchingdistance,unlessotherwisespecied.Amirrormaybe
necessarytoenhancevisualaccesstoallexposedsurfacesintheinspectionarea.
Thislevelofinspectionismadeundernormalavailablelightingconditionssuch
asdaylight,hangarlighting,ashlight,ordrop-lightandmayrequireremovalor
openingofaccesspanelsordoors.Stands,ladders,orplatformsmayberequired
togainproximitytotheareabeingchecked.
