Suddenstoppageisanyrapiddecelerationoftherotordrivesystem.This
maybecausedbytheseizureofthetailrotordrivesystemorbycontact
ofthetailrotorbladeswiththeground,water,snow,densevegetation,or
otherobjectsofsufcientmass.Thereisasuddenstoppagewhen:
•Atailrotorbladestrikessomeobjectwithaforcesufcienttorequirea
bladetobediscarded.
•Impactdamagetotheleadingedgeorskinexceedsthelimitsspecied
in429-MM,Chapter64.
•Thereisanydeformationofanycouplingdiscpacksthatresultsina
gapbetweenthelaminatesthatismorethan0.015inch(0.381mm).
•Bolt(s)onthecouplingdiscpackaredistortedorcracked.
•Thetailrotordriveshaft(s)aretwistedoutofroundorbowedtoan
extentthatexceedsthelimitsspeciedin429-MM,Chapter65.
•Thetailrotordriveshaftadapter(s)aredistortedbeyondthelimits
speciedin429-MM,Chapter65.
Ifasuddenstoppagehasoccurred,dothefollowinginspections:

1.Doaninspectionoftheforwarddriveshaftassemblyandgrease
couplingassembliesasfollows:
a.Disassembleandcleantheforwardandaftgreasecoupling
assemblies.
b.Visuallyexaminethemaleandfemalecouplinggearteethofthe
forwardandaftgreasecouplingassembliesforcondition.
c.Ifthemaleorfemalecouplinggearteethoftheforwardandaftgrease
couplingassembliesfailthevisualinspection,dothefollowing:
(1)Cleananddoadetailedinspectionoftheremainingpartsofthe
forwardandaftgreasecouplingassemblies.
(2)Cleananddoadetailedinspectionoftheforwarddriveshaftassembly.
(3)Replacewithserviceableparts.
