Suddenstoppageisanyrapiddecelerationoftherotordrivesystem.This
maybecausedbyseizureofthetransmissionassemblyorbycontactof
themainrotorbladeswiththeground,water,snow,densevegetation,or
otherobjectofsufcientmass.Thereisasuddenstoppagewhen:
•Amainrotorbladestrikessomeobjectwithaforcesufcienttorequire
abladetobediscarded.
•Impactdamagetotheleadingedgeorlowerskinexceedsthelimits
speciedin429-MM,Chapter62.
•Themastistwisted,bowed,oroutofroundnesstoanextentthat
exceedsthelimitsspeciedinthe429-MM,Chapter63.
Ifasuddenstoppageofthemainrotorresultsinseveredamage
ordistortiontothemainrotorblades,hub,ormast,doadetailed
inspectionofthetailrotordrivesystem.Ifanydamageisfound,
doasuddenstoppage(tailrotor)powerONorOFFinspection
(429-A-05-50-00-02A-284A-A).
Ifasuddenstoppagehasoccurred,dothefollowinginspections:
429-MM,Chapter62
429-MM,Chapter18
MAINROTOR
1.Visuallyexaminetheproductbalanceweightpocketofeachmain
rotorbladeforanyofthefollowing:
a.Retainers,weights,andwedgeshouldbesnug.Examineforgap
asshowninFigure1.Agapof0.040inch(1.02mm)orgreaterisnot
acceptable.
b.Removeretainersandweightsandmakesurethatthereisnobinding
oftheretainersandweights.
c.Visuallyexaminetheretainersandweightsforanyvisibledamage.
d.Ifbladeexhibitsanyoftheseconditions,sendthebladetoan
approvedfacilityforfurtherinspectionandrepair.
e.Removealloftheremainingblades.
f.AttachaTHISCOMPONENTWASREMOVEDFROMSERVICE
BECAUSEOFASUDDENSTOPPAGEtagoneachremainingblade.
g.Sendalloftheremainingbladestoanapprovedfacilityforfurther
inspectionandrepair.
