radiation escaped, but it would be so heavy that it would not
be a practical portable gauge.
The three ways the operator has to reduce the dose:
Time Minimize the time of exposure
Distance Do not get closer than necessary
Shielding Place a shield between the source and the
operator. The gauge has shielding installed
ALARA is another way of saying: Use common sense.
Time
When the operator is using a radioactive source, he is in a
radiation field from that source. Reducing the time spent with
the gauge significantly reduces the radiation dose received by
the operator. The strength or dose rate of that field is measured
in mRem per hour. For a given dose rate and time in the field
the operator will receive a dose.
