5. Check the blade adapter, motor shaft and hardware
for damage:
See Figure 7.9.
The end of the motor shaft should not wobble or
orbit when the motor shaft is rotated.
The key in the blade adapter and the keyway in the
motor shaft should engage firmly. The blade
adapter should not spin on the motor shaft.
The bowtie shaped boss and embossed pins on
the blade adapter should not be deformed. Corre

sponding holes in the blade should match the
blade adapter and fit securely over the bosses
(drive features) on the blade adapter.
The blade bolt should not be damaged, and the
Belleville spring that fits between the bolt head and
the blade should still have tension.
6. Install the blade by following the previous steps in reverse order. Tighten the blade bolt to a torque of 450 - 600
in-lbs (51 - 68 Nm).
NOTE: There are words stamped onto the blade. They must be facing the ground while cutting grass.
NOTE: Blades that are mounted upside down increase the risk of impacting an object.
7. Test-run the mower in a safe place. Do not put an unsafe mower back into service.
Sharpening the blades:
Remove the blades.
To properly sharpen the cutting blades, remove equal amounts of metal from both ends of the blades
along the cutting edges, parallel to the trailing edge, at a 25° to 30° angle.
Sharpen the top of the blade only, maintaining the factory cutting edge angle.
IMPORTANT: It is important that each cutting blade
edge be ground equally to maintai
n
proper blade balance.
IMPORTANT: Replace any blade with severe nicks
or dents that cannot be removed by
filing.
The blade can be tested by using a blade bal-
ancer. Grind metal from the heavy side until it
balances evenly.
NOTE: MTD blade balancer AR-SBB-102 or the
blade balancing kit, AR-BSK-1 can be used
to balance the blade.
See Figure 7.10.
