Chapter 1
| Initial Switch Configuration
Configuring the Switch for Remote Management
– 73 –
Assigning an IPv4 Address
Before you can assign an IP address to the switch, you must obtain the following
information from your network administrator:
ā—† IP address for the switch
ā—† Network mask for this network
ā—† Default gateway for the network
To assign an IPv4 address to the switch, complete the following steps
1. From the Global Configuration mode prompt, type ā€œinterface vlan 1ā€ to access
the interface-configuration mode. Press <Enter>.
2. Type ā€œip address ip-address netmask,ā€ where ā€œip-addressā€ is the switch IP
address and ā€œnetmaskā€ is the network mask for the network. Press <Enter>.
3. Type ā€œexitā€ to return to the global configuration mode prompt. Press <Enter>.
4. To set the IP address of the default gateway for the network to which the switch
belongs, type ā€œip default-gateway gateway,ā€ where ā€œgatewayā€ is the IP address
of the default gateway. Press <Enter>.
Console(config)#interface vlan 1
Console(config-if)#ip address 192.168.1.5 255.255.255.0
Console(config-if)#exit
Console(config)#ip default-gateway 192.168.1.254
Assigning an IPv6 Address
This section describes how to configure a ā€œlink localā€ address for connectivity
within the local subnet only, and also how to configure a ā€œglobal unicastā€ address,
including a network prefix for use on a multi-segment network and the host
portion of the address.
An IPv6 prefix or address must be formatted according to RFC 2373 ā€œIPv6
Addressing Architecture,ā€ using 8 colon-separated 16-bit hexadecimal values. One
double colon may be used to indicate the appropriate number of zeros required to
fill the undefined fields. For detailed information on the other ways to assign IPv6
addresses, see ā€œIPv6 Interfaceā€ on page 922.
Link Local Address — All link-local addresses must be configured with a prefix in
the range of FE80~FEBF. Remember that this address type makes the switch
accessible over IPv6 for all devices attached to the same local subnet only. Also, if
the switch detects that the address you configured conflicts with that in use by
another device on the subnet, it will stop using the address in question, and
automatically generate a link local address that does not conflict with any other
devices on the local subnet.
