6.9 Generator
The generator is supplied 12 volt power for the
ignition and starter motor by the House battery
bank and is located in the mechanical systems
compartment. The generator oil and coolant
should be checked whenever you check the oil in
the main engines.
A switch in the cabin generator control panel
controls the starting, running and stopping of the
generator. Lights or an LED screen in the panel
monitor engine temperature, exhaust temperature
and oil pressure.
Another switch below the control panel activates
the 12 volt DC blower that provides ventilation and
cooling for the mechanical systems compartment
when the generator is operating. Always make
sure the blower is activated at least four minutes
before starting the generator.
GASOLINE VAPORS CAN EXPLODE. BEFORE STARTING
THE GENERATOR, OPERATE THE BLOWER FOR FOUR (4)
MINUTES. OPEN THE MECHANICAL SYSTEMS COMPARTMENT
ACCESS HATCH, INSPECT THE FUEL SYSTEM AND CHECK
FOR THE ODOR OF GASOLINE VAPORS. ALWAYS OPERATE
THE BLOWER WHENEVER THE GENERATOR IS OPERATING.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD THIS PROCEDURE BE
OVERLOOKED.
The generator can also be operated from a control
panel on the generator. The circuit breakers and
fuses that protect the generator AC and DC circuits
are also on this panel or on the side of the panel
control box. An owner operator’s manual for the
generator has been supplied with this manual.
Please refer to it for details on generator operation
and circuit protection.
The generator engine uses a closed cooling system
with a seawater-cooled heat exchanger. A sacri-
cial anode in the seawater cooling system protects
generator components that are in contact with
