Assessing flaws on pipe products according to the API standard
T
he instrument needs to be calibrated using a notch or side drilled hole as reference sample flaw, after first
having set all the other calibration data (velocity, full scale, frequency, etc.).
Calibration:
8. Calibrate the instrument by activating Gate1 from the CAL menu and bringing it into position so that the
area where the indication is presumably located will be covered. The gate height is not important. The
signal must be between 5% and 100% of the screen height;
9. Select the API function from the MEAS menu;
10. Select CAL in the MODE video window;
11. Set the rd value (depth of the reference sample flaw) by positioning Gate1 so that it intersects the
reference sample flaw signal;
12. Set PEAK by pressing the FREEZE/PEAK key twice;
13. By pressing the SET key, the instrument automatically calculates the k factor which is shown on the
display (value which cannot be changed) and used to calculate the flaw depth. The instrument goes to
FREEZE mode;
14. Press the SET key again: the instrument goes to MEAS mode. The k and rd values are set and displayed
on the video without the possibility of changing them.
Measurements:
5. Select PEAK by pressing the FREEZE/PEAK key twice;
6. Move Gate1 so that the flaw signal is intersected;
7. By pressing the SET key the flaw is calculated and the id value is displayed on the screen; the
instrument goes to FREEZE mode;
8. To perform additional measurements press the SET key and the instrument is ready (by pressing the
FREEZE/PEAK key twice and then SET you obtain new readings).
