Section 3
• If your vehicle does stall while
traveling uphill, and you are
unable to back straight down,
do the following:
- Set the parking brake.
- If your vehicle is equipped
with an automatic transmis-
sion, shift into P (Park).
-Turn off the engine.
- Make sure that the transfer
case is in a drive gear and not
in N (Neutral).
- Exit the vehicle on the uphill
side and get help. Stay clear
of the vehicle’s rollover path.
CAUTION
With the transfer case in
neutral, the vehicle can roll
even if the transmission is in P
(Park). You or others could be
injured. If you are going to
leave your vehicle, be sure to
set the parking brake and shift
the transmission into P (Park),
but do not shift the transfer
case to the neutral position.
DRIVING DOWNHILL
When off-roading takes you down-
hill, you’ll want to consider a
number of things:
• How steep is the downhill
slope? Will I be able to main-
tain vehicle control?
• What’s the surface like?
Smooth? Rough? Slippery?
Hard-packed dirt? Gravel?
• Are there hidden surface obsta-
cles? Ruts? Logs? Boulders?
• What’s at the bottom of the
hill? Is there a hidden creek
bank or even a river bottom
with large rocks?
