6.5-1
6.5 Should I Select ‘Fixed Speed’ or ‘Encoder’ Mode of
Operation?
ICE Torus printers can operate in one of two ‘Conveyor Speed Modes’:-
“Fixed Speed Mode” – suitable for products that are conveyed at a ‘fixed speed’ i.e. the linear
speed (metres per minute) of the conveyor does not change
“Encoder Mode” – suitable for variable speed conveying systems. This mode is
recommended for high accuracy printing, e.g. barcodes, high quality graphics
The default setting for ICE Torus is ‘Fixed Speed Mode’.
The linear speed of the conveyor should be measured (mm/min) and the figure entered into
the Fixed Speed parameter in CLARiTY™ Configuration Manager and downloaded to the
ICE Torus printer (see section 11.0 later in this guide for further details).
If the conveyor speed is variable, the ICE Torus encoder kit, part number - 402275, will be
required (see section 11.0 later in this guide for further details).
IMPORTANT WARNING: It is essential that the ICE Torus 500/126 printers are only used
with a fully screened encoder, Part Number 402275. Failure to do so may result in equipment
damage and product malfunction. Any equipment damage resulting from the use of incorrect
or unscreened encoders will not be covered by the equipment warranty.”
The encoder must be installed to run positively against a conveyor roller or belt.
The ICE Torus printer will assume the encoder signals received represent the linear speed of
conveyor.
If slippage occurs between the conveyor and the encoder wheel, printed images may appear
elongated or distorted.
PLEASE NOTE: TO ENSURE CORRECT OPERATION, THE ENCODER SHOULD BE
MOUNTED POSITIVELY AGAINST THE CONVEYOR DRIVE BELT OR DRIVE ROLLER.
THE ENCODER IS NOT DESIGNED TO ACT AGAINST THE PRODUCT ITSELF.
