Examine the tie rod assembly
NOTE
Do not grease the tie rod assembly before you perform the examina‐
tion.
1 Park the vehicle on a level surface with the wheels straight.
Block the wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving. Set the
parking brake.
2 Raise the vehicle so that the front wheels are off the ground.
Support the vehicle with safety stands. Do not use a jack to
support the vehicle.
3 With the engine off, turn the wheels from full left to full right.
Return to the straight-ahead position. This step will require
more force for vehicles with the power steering off.
4 Examine that the tie rod nut is installed and secured with a
cotter pin.
If the cotter pin is missing tighten the tie rod end nut and
install a new cotter pin.
Do not loosen the tie rod end nut to insert the cotter pin.
5 Apply hand pressure (approximately 100 pounds) to the tie
bar in a vertical push and pull motion several times. Examine
for any movement or looseness at both tie rod ends. Apply
pressure as close to the socket as possible.
If there is any movement in the tie rod assembly, replace both
tie rod ends.
6 Examine the cross tube and clamps for damage.
If the cross tube is bent or cracked: Replace it.
If the clamps are damaged: Replace them.
If either clamp has become welded to the cross tube:
Replace the entire cross tube assembly.
