NOTE
When performing the HOT EXAMINATION, the fluid must be at oper‐
ating temperature to be sure of an accurate examination and help
prevent transmission damage. The fluid level increases as tempera‐
ture increases. During operation, an overfull transmission can
become overheated leading to transmission damage.
NOTE
The fluid level increases as fluid temperature increases, DO NOT fill
above COLD EXAMINATION band if the transmission fluid is below
normal operating temperatures. During operation an overfull transmis‐
sion can become overheated, leading to transmission damage.
Cold examination
1 Park the vehicle on a level surface, chock the wheels, and
apply the parking brake.
2 Run the engine at idle (500 - 800 rpm) for approximately 1
minute.
3 Shift to D (Drive) and then to R (Reverse) to clear the
hydraulic system of air.
4 Shift to N (Neutral) and allow the engine to remain at idle (500
- 800 rpm).
5 Insert the dipstick into the tube until it stops and remove.
6 Examine the fluid level. Repeat the examination to verify the
reading.
7 If the fluid level is within the COLD EXAMINATION band, the
transmission can be operated until the fluid is hot enough to
make a HOT EXAMINATION.
8 If the fluid level is not within the COLD EXAMINATION band,
add or drain as necessary to bring the fluid level to the middle
of the COLD EXAMINATION band. Refer to the previous fig‐
ure.
9 Make a hot examination at the first opportunity after normal
operating temperature (71 - 93°C) is reached.
