products,youcanusemeasureslikethose
describedabovetoreduceyourRFexposure
fromwirelessphoneuse.
10. What about children using wireless
phones?
Thescienticevidencedoesnotshowa
dangertousersofwirelessphones,including
childrenandteenagers.Ifyouwanttotake
stepstolowerexposuretoRadioFrequency
(RF)energy,themeasuresdescribedabove
wouldapplytochildrenandteenagers
usingwirelessphones.Reducingthetime
ofwirelessphoneuseandincreasingthe
distancebetweentheuserandtheRFsource
willreduceRFexposure.
Somegroupssponsoredbyothernational
governmentshaveadvisedthatchildrenbe
discouragedfromusingwirelessphonesat
all.Forexample,thegovernmentintheUnited
Kingdomdistributedleaetscontainingsuch
arecommendationinDecember2000.They
notedthatnoevidenceexiststhatusinga
wirelessphonecausesbraintumorsorother
illeffects.Theirrecommendationtolimit
wirelessphoneusebychildrenwasstrictly
precautionary;itwasnotbasedonscientic
evidencethatanyhealthhazardexists.
11. What about wireless phone interfer-
ence with medical equipment?
RadioFrequency(RF)energyfromwireless
phonescaninteractwithsomeelectronic
devices.Forthisreason,theFDAhelped
developadetailedtestmethodtomeasure
ElectroMagneticInterference(EMI)of
implantedcardiacpacemakersand
debrillatorsfromwirelesstelephones.
Thistestmethodisnowpartofastandard
sponsoredbytheAssociationforthe
AdvancementofMedicalInstrumentation
(AAMI).Thenaldraft,ajointeffortbythe
FDA,medicaldevicemanufacturers,and
manyothergroups,wascompletedinlate
2000.Thisstandardwillallowmanufacturers
toensurethatcardiacpacemakersand
debrillatorsaresafefromwirelessphone
EMI.
