ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CHIPPER KNIFE MAINTENANCE
Properly maintained chipper knives will give you longer service. When knives are badly
abused you can usually only expect minimal sharpenings before the knife is worn out. With
proper maintenance and frequent knife changes, you can get more knife sharpenings per
edge. When sharpening knives, proper grinding techniques must be used.Dull knives are
caused by:
-Use of wrong cutting angles and bevels. -Poor grinding procedures.
-Improper care of knives. -Dirty material being chipped.
-Long overdue knife changes. -Foreign items in material.
(Nails, wire steel etc)
Thoroughly clean and inspect each knife for damage before sharpening. Check both sides
of the knife for cracks and discard if cracks are found. Lay a straight edge on the mounting
side of the knife to ensure that it is at. Distorted knives may break and/or pack wood and
should not be used.
Bevel of knife must
extend furthur out than
mounting bolts for clear-
ance when chipping.
