4. The spark arrestor can be:
• Replaced
• Cleaned by mechanical means
• Solvent cleaned
• Burned clean using a butane or propane torch.
5. Install the spark arrestor by following steps 1-3 in
reverse order.
To remove/replace the muffler
1. Remove the two muffler nuts using a 13mm
wrench.
See Figure 8.4.
2. Lift the muffler off of the engine.
3. Clean all of the gasket material off of the cylinder
head and the muffler (if reusing the muffler).

NOTE: The MTD engine uses a graphite
exhaust gasket. It is not reusable and must be
replaced every time the muffler nuts are loos
-
ened.
NOTE: The graphite exhaust gasket transfers
heat from the cylinder head to the muffler. The
heat transfer helps to keep the engine operating
temperature under control. Do not substitute an
exhaust gasket made from another material.
4. Install a new gasket.
5. Install the muffler and tighten the muffler nuts to
a torque of 13 - 16 ft-lbs (18-22 Nm).
6. Test run the engine before returning to service.
